The search for a 26-year-old man missing off Sydney's Maroubra Beach has been suspended for the night.

The body of the man's companion, a 23-year-old woman, was found by a jogger on the eastern Sydney beach early on Tuesday.

It's believed the pair came to Australia from Nepal to study.

Marine police, PolAir, police divers and rescue helicopters were unable to find the man on Wednesday, and the effort was suspended at 4pm.

The search is due to resume on Thursday.
