Police will comb land throughout the night in the search for a surfer missing from a Gold Coast Beach.

A fisherman called police on Thursday morning, saying a surfer hadn't resurfaced after going under a wave at The Spit.

An air, sea and land search has failed to uncover any sign of the man.

However, a vehicle found in a nearby car park belongs to a 34-year-old who cannot be located.

Police say they're working with family and friends to establish the man's movements.

The search involving police, water police and other agencies will continue until dusk on Thursday.

Police patrols will conduct land searches throughout the night, while the aerial and sea search will resume at first light.
