Search for missing Queenslander suspended

Police have suspended a search for a missing man in north Queensland and are waiting for more information.

A land and air search for a missing man in north Queensland has been called off.

Stephen Currie, 40, was last seen nearly a week ago walking near the intersection of Smelter and Zillmanton roads in Chillagoe, a small mining town west of Cairns.

Police say he has not been in contact with family and friends since.

A land and air search on New Year's Eve failed to find him.

The State Emergency Service and police spent New Year's Day searching old mine shafts, caves and waterholes in the area.

Police suspended the search on Thursday, saying it is unclear if he is still in the area. They are waiting for fresh information.
