The search for a 59-year-old man who vanished while kayaking in waters off Perth's south has been suspended for the day due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Stephen Angel activated his personal locator beacon about 11am on Wednesday but only his kayak, a paddle and the beacon have been found.

The air search continued overnight with the use of heat-sensing camera equipment, and the marine search operation from Cape Peron resumed on Thursday morning.

Police expect the search will recommence on Friday morning.

Family members said he was fit, strong and experienced on the water.

"It's worrying to think what could have gone wrong," a female relative told 7 News.

"He's so good out there with that sort of thing."
