The search for an elderly fisherman believed missing in South Australia has been called off until first light on Sunday.

Another angler found an empty boat in waters near Fisherman's Bay, off the coast of Port Broughton, and towed it into shore before alerting police on Saturday afternoon.

Police believe the elderly man fell off his boat some time in the morning and launched a search about 4pm with the assistance of the SES.

The search was called off about an hour later and SA police said it would resume at first light on Sunday.
