NSW police have scaled down their search for two of Australia's most wanted men.

Officers remain on high alert for criminals Gino Stocco, 57, and his son Mark Stocco, 35, who have been on the run for eight years.

The pair allegedly shot at police twice when spotted near Wagga Wagga on Friday afternoon, but PolAir won't be involved in the search on Sunday, a police spokeswoman said.

The duo allegedly shot at officers again when they were spotted near an intersection in Mangoplah a short time later.

The silver Nissan Navara in which the pair were travelling was reportedly found abandoned on a property near Wagga Wagga.

The men are wanted for a string of violent offences and are believed to be armed and police are urging the public to not approach them.
