Police have resumed the search for an abalone diver taken by two great white sharks while diving off the South Australian coast.

Senior Constable Paul Noble said the diver was returning to the surface on Thursday evening when two sharks attacked him south of Perforated Island, near Coffin Bay.

The skipper of the boat witnessed the attack and was treated by ambulance officers for shock after the incident, which occurred about 6.20pm (CDT).

The search for the man's body was stopped in fading light on Thursday night and resumed at first light on Friday morning.

Snr Const Noble said there has been no trace of the man or any of his equipment at this stage.
