Seat redraw won't cut women candidates

The South Australian branch of the ALP will honour its affirmative action commitments despite a male candidate likely to replace a retiring woman.

Changes to federal seat boundaries in South Australia won't lead to fewer women being preselected for Labor, a senior party member says.

Labor frontbencher Mark Butler said earlier this week he would seek pre-selection for the seat of Hindmarsh after a redistribution abolished his electorate of Port Adelaide.

Current sitting Hindmarsh MP, Labor's Steve Georganas will seek to move to the neighbouring seat of Adelaide, due to be vacated by former Labor minister Kate Ellis.

There has been speculation a deal has been struck ensuring a woman will be pre-selected for the second spot on the party's Senate ticket for SA.

Mr Butler said nominations were still under way, but there was a strong commitment to women's representation.

"The South Australian branch is obviously bound like every other branch by our affirmative action quota," he told Sky News on Friday.

"It's been a great thing for our party ... and we'll meet it again this time I'm sure."

The final SA federal boundaries will be published on Friday.
