Wade Seccombe will make the leap from Queensland Cricket's boardroom to its dressing room, having been appointed coach of the Bulls.
Seccombe won five Sheffield Shield titles with Queensland and served as Australia's back-up wicketkeeper on the 2001 Ashes tour.
The 45-year-old dived into both the business and coaching world following his retirement in 2005.
Seccombe, who holds a master's degree in business, was Darren Lehmann's right-hand man when the current national coach was mentoring Queensland and Brisbane Heat.
Seccombe was in the mix to replace Lehmann as Bulls coach in 2013 but that job went to Stuart Law.
Former Test opener Phil Jaques' recent return to Sydney for family reasons meant the post became vacant again.
Ryan Harris, James Hopes and Ashley Noffke were all floated as contenders, while it's understood Queensland Cricket also spoke with Brisbane Heat coach Daniel Vettori to gauge his interest.
Seccombe, who was appointed to Queensland Cricket's board last year, proved the standout candidate.
"I thoroughly appreciated my time on the board and thank the chairman and my fellow directors for their assistance and encouragement during that time," Seccombe said, having stood down this week as a director.
"And for the opportunity to pursue the Bulls job when it arose."
Seccombe played more than 200 games for Queensland and held the state record for most dismissals until Chris Hartley passed him last season.
"I was fortunate to play in an era where we enjoyed our share of success and benefited from the expertise of some great coaches," he said.
"Coming back into that environment now as a coach is incredibly exciting.
"Phil has done a wonderful job with the squad and I thank him for his work in developing a group of players who have enormous prospects."
Queensland were runners-up in last summer's one-day competition and fifth in the Shield.
Former Test opener Joe Burns, destructive batsman Chris Lynn and young guns Mitch Swepson, Sam Heazlett, Billy Stanlake and Jack Wildermuth will be among the Bulls leaning on Seccombe to further their Test ambitions.
