A second body has been found after a boating mishap off Tasmania's northeast coast.

Police were notified at 12.40am on Monday after two men failed to return from a boat trip at Waterhouse at the expected time.

They later said a second body had been found. The death of a 35-year-old man was confirmed earlier in the morning.

Police initially believed that neither of the men were wearing life jackets but now say only one of the men was without a life jacket when he was found.
