A second boy has been arrested over a large fire that burnt 5000 hectares in the NSW Hunter region.

Police say they are questioning the 15-year-old boy and expect to charge him.

Earlier police charged an 11-year-old boy with deliberately lighting the fire at Heatherbrae on October 13.

The blaze destroyed a number of sheds, burnt through bushland in Heatherbrae, Williamtown, Campvale, Tomago and Medowie and forced the closure of Newcastle Airport.
