WA allrounder Hilton Cartwright has joined Victorian captain Matthew Wade as casualties on day one of the Sheffield Shield cricket match at the MCG.

Cartwright had to be helped from the field soon after tea when he appeared to injure his left hamstring.

He was running at top speed, trying to stop a boundary, when he suddenly grabbed the back of his left leg and collapsed to the ground.

Two teammates then supported him as he limped from the ground.

Earlier on Saturday, Wade was also forced out of the game with a fractured collarbone.

Wade won the toss and elected to bat, but then was hit while batting in the nets.

He went for scans, which confirmed the injury, and then returned to the ground.

News of the injury emerged during the lunch break.

Victoria rushed Aaron Ayre into the team to make his first-class debut and keep wickets in Wade's absence.

Match referee Bob Stratford approved the late change to their line-up.

"Matt will get further medical advice on Monday to determine the extent of the injury and recovery period," said Victorian physiotherapist Nick Adcock.

Peter Siddle will captain the team for the rest of the game.

Siddle returned to Melbourne early on Saturday morning after being released from Test duties in Perth.

Siddle can only play on day one as a batsman if required.
