Two people are dead and three are in hospital after separate pile-ups on Melbourne freeways in the past 24 hours.

One person was killed when a truck and four cars collided on the Calder Freeway about 6.30am on Friday, emergency services say.

Two men were taken to hospital in a stable condition and another five people were assessed by paramedics.

Inbound lanes of the Calder Freeway were closed shortly after the crash and are yet to reopen.

A truck fire in the outbound lanes of the Monash Freeway, near Yarra Boulevard, and a car fire in the westbound lanes of the Western Ring Road, near Sydney Road, closed lanes and caused further traffic chaos on the freeway network.

The incidents come after another fatal collision on Thursday afternoon when a truck and six cars collided on the Princes Freeway near Point Cook.

A 28-year-old man died, his 31-year-old female passenger was seriously injured, and 12 other people were assessed by paramedics.

After being closed for more than nine hours, the freeway reopened about midnight on Friday.

Police have asked people in the vicinity of the crash to check their dash cams and contact police.
