Second straight surf lay day in Sth Africa

Small waves and inconsistent conditions have delayed the World Surfing League event for a second day in a row at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.

The start of the World Surfing League (WSL) event at South Africa's Jeffreys Bay has been postponed for a second day as organisers hold off for better conditions.

Stop No.6 on the 2017 WSL tour was called off again on Thursday, with waves of less than one metre and inconsistent surf on offer, but with conditions expected to improve over coming days.

"The conditions are a bit better than yesterday but the surf is very inconsistent and decreasing throughout the day," said WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel.

"We won't run any heats today on the basis that we have a great looking forecast. It looks like things will improve tomorrow so we'll be back to take another look, but we are expecting some onshore winds."

Australia's championship leader Matt Wilkinson, after his recent win in Fiji is drawn against countryman Ethan Ewing and Frenchman Jeremy Flores in round one.

Reigning WSL champion John John Florence of Hawaii sits just 250 points behind Wilkinson, ahead of an opening-round showdown with Brazil's Ian Gouveia and wildcard Dale Staples.

Australian two-time event winner and 2012 world champion Joel Parkinson will be first to compete alongside Brazilians Wiggolly Dantas and Miguel Pupo in the first heat.

Event organisers will reconvene on Friday morning (7:00am) local time to assess conditions and make the next call.
