Queensland Police are investigating the death of a security guard who died after helping to restrain a patient at Gympie Hospital.

An investigation is underway into the death of a 46-year-old hospital security guard who died after helping to restrain a patient.

The man was confronted by a patient in Gympie Hospital's mental health unit around 11am on Sunday and died half an hour later, reportedly after feeling short of breath.

Queensland Police have launched an investigation into his death and will prepare a report for the coroner.
