Senate blocks territories euthanasia bill

Legislation to restore the rights of the ACT and Northern Territory to make assisted suicide laws has been blocked in the Senate.

The Senate has voted down legislation to restore the rights of the ACT and Northern Territory to make assisted suicide laws.

Crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm's bill was defeated 36 votes to 34 in the upper house on Wednesday after two days of passionate debate.

The legislation would have repealed a 1997 ban on territories making euthanasia laws.
