Senate debate 'hits rock bottom': Xenophon

Independent senator Nick Xenophon believes a marathon Senate debate on changes to how Australians vote has hit "rock bottom".

He might not be a supporter of gagging debate in parliament, but even independent senator Nick Xenophon thinks a fight over Senate voting changes has hit rock bottom.

The senator - who wore his pyjamas in the upper house during a marathon sitting through Thursday night - questioned whether the lengthy session was necessary.

"When one of the senators, my good friend Senator (Glenn) Sterle from the Labor party gets up and tries to draw comparisons with colonoscopies ... we've literally hit rock bottom," Senator Xenophon told ABC radio, as the Senate continued to sit into Friday morning.
