A Senate committee will investigate high suicide rates among Australian veterans.

The inquiry instigated by independent senator Jacqui Lambie, along with other crossbenchers on Thursday, will also look at the performance of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Senator Lambie, a former soldier, has alleged corruption and incompetence by the government department.
