Senate inquiry needed for Centrelink system 'mess': Labor

The federal opposition says a Senate inquiry is needed to see what can be done to fix the Centrelink debt recovery system.

Labor will push for a senate inquiry into the government's controversial Centrelink debt recovery system when parliament resumes next month.

It has already called for the automated process to be suspended following widespread criticism.

"We need an inquiry to get to the bottom of how the government got this so wrong, how people have been impacted and what can be done to fix this mess," opposition human services spokeswoman Linda Burney said on Wednesday.
