Senate urges support for electric cars

The Senate has urged the federal government to back the electric car-making industry.

The Senate has called on the federal government to divert car industry assistance to making electric cars.

The motion by Greens senator Robert Simms, agreed to in parliament on Tuesday, calls on the government to support South Australian workers after the Holden Elizabeth plant closure.

"We need to shift our focus to 21st century technologies, utilising existing manufacturing skills by building a world-leading electric car industry that will get our state economy back on track," Senator Simms said in a statement.
