In the wake of Hillary Clinton's failure to break through the glass ceiling and win the White House, a Senate cross bencher appears to have temporarily forgotten Australia already had its first female prime minister.
Asked about the likelihood of a female US president in his lifetime, Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm said there was no reason why it couldn't happen, but then seemed to have a memory lapse.
"We've seen women prime ministers in Britain and Germany, there's no particular reason why we couldn't have a woman prime minister here," he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.
Julia Gillard became Australia's first female prime minister in June 2010.
Senator Leyonhjelm argued women were more sensible than men for not putting themselves forward as much for public office.
"Why would you want to be a politician? It's a tough gig, everybody hates you," he said.
"Women are too sensible to do it and then men get abused because there is not enough women in politics, it's as if it's our fault that they are smart."
Senator Leyonhjelm said American voters were worried about things other than Mr Trump's misogyny and disrespect towards women.
One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts insists Mr Trump had been misrepresented in the media over his behaviour towards women.
"He has denied all of those (sexual harassment claims) and he is going to take some of those women to court for lying about him," he said.
