Family First Senator Bob Day is optimistic his High Court challenge to the way voters elect senators will be successful.

Senator Day hopes his case will join other landmark decisions such as Mabo - which recognised the land rights of indigenous Australians.

"I'm always optimistic and it is a brave person who tries to second guess what the High Court might say," Senator Day told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
