Senators plan no pay rise before surplus

Senators will vote on a motion to freeze their pay until the federal government delivers a budget surplus.

Senators will be asked to vote on whether they should forgo pay rises until the federal government delivers a budget surplus.

The proposal comes from former government senator Cory Bernardi and Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm who have given notice for a motion to be moved in the upper house on Tuesday.

"The Senate is of the view that all senators receive an appropriate remuneration package and therefore the Remuneration Tribunal should not consider increasing the remuneration paid to senators until the government has delivered a budget surplus," the motion says.

Meanwhile, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson will on Tuesday introduce a private bill to amend the law around executive pay.
