Senators scratch heads over UK election

There are lessons to be learned from the unexpected outcome in the UK general election last week, senators say.

As federal politicians return to Canberra for parliament's final session before the winter break, some are still reeling from the outcome of the UK general election.

Conservative prime minister Theresa May lost her party's absolute majority in the Commons on the back of an unforeseen swing to Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party.

"The lesson here, as we go back for a new session, is anything is possible in politics when you stand here and think Boris Johnson could be the prime minister of the UK," crossbench senator Derryn Hinch told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

"That's a hell of a life."

With speculation about a federal election in August or September 2018, Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm had only one piece of advice for Australia's prime minister.

"Malcolm (Turnbull) don't call an early election! It would be a dumb idea," Senator Leyonhjelm said.

Greens senator Nick McKim said Mr Corbyn's unexpectedly strong performance showed people wanted larger government.

"They want political parties and politicians that are prepared to look past austerity, to look past trickle down economics and think about the future," Senator McKim said.
