Former Australian Open champion John Senden will take an indefinite break from professional golf, announcing son Jacob has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Senden, a two-time winner on the US PGA Tour, revealed the news after withdrawing from this weeks' Zurich Classic of New Orleans to be with Jacob, 13, and wife Jackie.
"Our son is undertaking the biggest challenge of his life thus far, having been diagnosed with a brain tumour," said Senden in a statement.
The 46-year-old Queenslander will put his golf career on hold to remain at his Texas home in Dallas, where Jacob is expected to undergo treatment.
"I have no timeline for my return to the PGA Tour at this stage," said Senden.
"As a family, we appreciate the support and kindness that everyone has offered us at this difficult time and ask that you keep Jacob in your prayers and hearts.
"Together, we will stand strong to tackle this disease and look forward to the day when Jacob is cancer free.
"With respect, we now ask for privacy in this matter."
Senden, who turned professional in 1992, has played 16 seasons on the PGA Tour - amassing more than $US21 million in career earnings.
The Brisbane native's six worldwide victories includes lifting the Stonehaven Cup at the 2006 Australian Open at Royal Sydney.
