Senior and Allenby back for NSW Open golf

Dual Australian Open champions Peter Senior, Robert Allenby and Peter Lonard are among the golf stars returning for next week's NSW Open.

Australian Tour greats Peter Senior and Robert Allenby are among the golf stars helping to take the NSW Open back to its glory days.

Senior, Allenby, fellow former dual Australian Open champion Peter Lonard, popular cancer survivor Jarrod Lyle. US tour regular Rhein Gibson and World Long Drive Champion Jamie Sadlowski will headline the 156-man field next week at Sydney's Stonecutters Ridge.

With a purse of $400,000 - more than triple that of last year - and tier-one status on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the tournament has attracted the strongest line-up since Greg Norman drew tens of thousands of fans to the fairways in the 1980s.

Other stalwarts teeing off in the 85-year-old event include Nick O'Hern, Peter O'Malley and Peter Fowler.

"This is a crack field of players ready to contest the Kel Nagle Cup," said Golf NSW general manager Graeme Phillipson.

"It's going to be a real treat for fans."

At 56, Senior remains very much a force on tour, taking out last year's Australian Masters at Huntingdale, three years after becoming the oldest Australian Open winner in history.

A 23-time winner on the PGA Tour of Australasia, Senior has won two Australian Opens, three Australian Masters and three Australian PGA Championships in a professional career stretching back to 1978.

Allenby is out to lift the Kel Nagle Cup for the first time in what would be the US PGA Tour veteran's 14th win on home soil.
