Seven arrested over NT spear deaths

Seven people have been arrested over the deaths of two men on Groote Eylandt after a spear fight sparked by a family feud.

Seven people have been arrested after two Aboriginal men were killed in a spear fight sparked by a family feud on a remote island off the Northern Territory coast.

A 19-year-old and a 29-year-old were killed in the fight in Angurugu, a community on Groote Eylandt, on Friday.

On Monday 13 people from Umbakumba surrendered themselves to Alyangula Police.

Seven were arrested and are being taken to Darwin to be interviewed by Major Crime detectives.

Police Commander Tony Fuller says tensions on Groote Eylandt remain high but progress is being made.

A high police presence remains on the island and police are trying to identify more suspects.

He says those arrested are all part of the group associated with the 19-year-old.

"These men have voluntarily surrendered to take responsibility for their actions from Friday," he said.

"Included in the group of seven are significant persons of interest who police allege were responsible for the death of the 29-year-old man."

Commander Fuller said police now aimed to gain the trust of the second group involved in the fight and negotiate a similar surrender of those involved.

The unrest was initially caused by an argument between two women, including one who was knocked unconscious the day before.

Several male relatives became involved in the fallout from the dispute, some armed with weapons including spears, machetes and hammers - the fight occurring in front of police, who were forced to retreat.
