Seven die in Peruvian highway crash

Seven people are dead, including two children, as the result of a head-on crash involving a bus and a truck in central Peru.

At least seven people, including two children, have been killed in a collision between a bus and a truck on a highway in central Peru.

The head-on crash happened on Saturday night at a crossroad on the Central Highway as the bus headed from the jungle city of Satipo to Lima, police say.

Investigators suspect the truck was speeding.

Peru has many problems with its roads and a large number of old vehicles.

Experts contend the accident rate in the country's interior is extremely high due to the poor condition of roads, an obsolete bus fleet and drivers who obtain black market licences.
