Seven people have been rescued from crocodile-infested waters in the Northern Territory after their car was washed off a flooded road.

Police say the group got into trouble about 8pm on Thursday while attempting to negotiate Cahills Crossing - a notorious feeding ground for crocodiles.

Half way across, their four wheel drive stalled and was washed partially into the East Alligator River.

Seven passengers climbed onto the roof where they waited two hours before a passerby heard their calls for help.

Kakadu Park Rangers rescued the group by boat.

"With the wet season upon us this is a timely reminder for all Territorians to exercise caution when travelling and to never attempt to cross flooded roadways," the NT Police Facebook page said.
