A cool change has brought a severe storm but broken a heatwave in southeastern Queensland.

Severe thunderstorms have lashed southeastern Queensland, breaking a heatwave that had set new records.

Ipswich, west of Brisbane, was hardest hit by Monday night's storm, that brought strong winds, hail and torrential rain.

Around 20,000 properties lost power and some damage reported.
