Sex infection tests at WA music festival

Free testing for sexually transmitted infections will be offered at a Perth music festival in January, following the success of similar testing in NSW.

Music lovers attending a Perth festival this summer will be offered free testing for sexually transmitted infections, with participants rewarded with free drinks and condoms, and access to superior toilets.

The Health Department will provide on-site testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea at the Falls Festival in Fremantle on January 5 and 6.

A urine sample collected at the "pampering facility" will be sent off-site to a lab, with results returned via text message within a week.

It follows the success of similar testing at music festivals in NSW.

In the year to September 30, people aged 16 to 24 accounted for 51 per cent of the 11,486 chlamydia notifications in Western Australia.

Health minister Roger Cook told reporters on Wednesday that the state government would monitor the success of pill testing at festivals in other states before deciding whether to roll out a similar program in WA.
