Australians will have to say goodbye to Sex, but the minor political party says it's for good Reason.

The nation's only Sex Party MP Fiona Patten says the party will change its name to the Reason Party ahead of the 2018 Victorian election, in a bid to appeal to a broader base.

"So Sex Party is just going to be part of this new voice of reason," Ms Patten told reporters at the Victorian parliament on Tuesday.

"I think certainly it seems the extremists are really taking the lead in Australian politics at the moment and unless we fill that vacuum with something else they will continue to take over politics."

The Sex Party will deregister federally this week and be re-badged at a state level in time for next year's November election.

The party will develop a broad policy platform but positions in favour of voluntary assisted dying, drug law reform, gender equality, and marriage equality will not change, she said.

Ms Patten isn't worried about voters abandoning the party under its less-salacious name.

"We have seen a disengaged community, I think particularly amongst young voters, and I hope that our new movement will re-engage those people in a way that maybe the Sex Party couldn't achieve."
