Sexual assaults hits seven-year high

The latest crime figures show there were 23,000 victims of sexual assault in 2016 - a seven-year high.

Sexual assault is on the rise, with the number of victims hitting a seven-year high of 23,000 last year.

And for one in six of those victims, investigations wrapped up with no offender proceeded against.

The latest crime figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday show the largest increases occurred in Tasmania (up 15 per cent) and Victoria (up 14 per cent).

Both the number of female and male victims were the highest since the Recorded Crime - Victims collection of data began in 2010.

There were almost 19,000 female victims and more than 4000 male.

Almost 3000 victims were under nine years old.

More than 14,000 were sexually assaulted in a private dwelling.

The figures reveal investigations were not finalised in the majority of cases.

For the 8000 victims whose cases were finalised, no offender was proceeded against in more than half of those cases.

Victoria was also revealed as Australia's car theft capital, with a 25 per cent increase in reported thefts, impacting almost 20,000 victims in 2016.

By comparison, NSW had 12,000 victims of car theft.

The number of car thefts overall rose for the second year in a row reaching the highest levels since 2012 with more than 56,000 victims.

The number of robbery victims topped 9000 in 2016, a slight increase from 2015 but well down on the near 15,000 victims reported in 2010.
