Queensland swimmer Nicholas Schafer won Australia's first gold medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Monday night with victory in the 100m breaststroke.
Having qualified fastest all the way through the competition, the 18-year-old from Brisbane came from behind to win in the time of 1min 1.38sec.
Trailing third after 50m, Schafer managed to overhaul Russia's Anton Lobanov by a finger tip and win by 0.06 of a second.

A relaxed Schafer said he'd been unconcerned about trailing at the halfway mark.
"I never try to get out as fast as possible as I want to save something for the end of the race." he said.
"I saw him out of the corner of my eye, but I tried not to focus on that as it would have ruined the rest of my race. I knew I would be a close one and I hope it will build a good rivalry for the future."
The women's 4x100m medley relay team also finished the night with gold in different circumstances.
Second-place finishers Madison Wilson, Emily Selig, Zoe Johnson and Emma McKeon were promoted to first after the Chinese team were disqualified for an illegal changeover on the third leg.
"We didn't even know the Chinese had been disqualified until the Russian team told us," Johnson said.
"We were excited to get silver, but it's not the way you want to win. It's a real shame for China as they swam so well."
Kenneth To collected silver in the 200m individual medley behind Chad Le Clos of South Africa.
