People dug a trench to hydrate the shark after it stranded itself on Wellfleet Beach in Cape Cod on Sunday.

Freelance photographer Stephan Werk filmed the rescue effort, telling CNN that the shark was “pretty massive”.

“We walked down there and the first thing I noticed was a shark’s fin,” Mr Werk told CNN.

“People at the time were just shuffling back and forth pouring buckets of water into a little moat they had built to keep the shark cool.”

The shark was pulled back into the ocean, but was later reported as dead by the Boston Globe
