Professional surfer Taj Burrow has thrown his support behind recently listed shark deterrent company Shark Mitigation Systems.
Mr Burrow has signed on as an ambassador of Shark Mitigation Systems and will promote and work on the company's technology, which is designed to detect sharks and to prevent attacks.
The announcement comes a day after a 29-year-old surfer lost a leg in a shark attack south of Perth.
The man remains in hospital in a critical condition.
Shark Mitigation Systems (SMS) co-founder Craig Anderson said "surfing legend" Mr Burrow was chosen as an ambassador because "Taj knows better than anyone the risks of competing in and appreciating the ocean" and sharing it with its natural inhabitants.
The company, in conjunction with The University of Western Australia, has developed patterns that can be applied to wetsuits and surf craft to disrupt sharks' visual perception and reduce the risk of an attack.
It is also commercialising a shark detection system, Clever Buoy, following a successful trial at Sydney's Bondi Beach that utilises sonar and newly developed software to detect shark-like movements and to warn beachgoers.
