A shark sighting has prompted a brief closure of Sydney's famous Bondi Beach.

A warning was issued after the shark was sighted at around 7.15am on Thursday, Waverley Council said in a statement.

The beach was evacuated until lifeguards were able to chase the shark off with a jetski and it has since reopened.

Surfers and swimmers were returning to the water just after 9am, a surfcam shows.
