Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie has claimed victory in the South Australian seat of Mayo - for the second time in 10 months - after a "dirty" campaign.

Ms Sharkie had polled 55 per cent of two-party preferred votes with more than 51 per cent of ballots counted.

That would return her a slightly increased majority over her Liberal opponent Georgina Downer, who she also defeated in last year's by-election.

But addressing her supporters on Saturday night, Ms Sharkie congratulated her community for not buying into letterbox advertising.

"We were a big target this time and it was nasty, we all know that," she said.

"I made myself a bigger target, I came in 2016 as an unknown so I didn't have all of the attack advertising through the letterbox... but it certainly took it to a whole new level this campaign."

Ms Sharkie told reporters she was hoping to work with a "frustrating" Coalition government to achieve a Federal ICAC and "restore integrity into the parliament."

She said she didn't think anyone was expecting the predicted Liberal win.

"It's my job to work with whoever the government of the day is, and I will do that," she said.

Ms Downer, the daughter of former foreign minister Alexander Downer, was reluctant to concede defeat at her election function.

"We're still seeing results come in and there was an enormous amount of pre-polls and postal votes so we'll see," she said.

"We ran a huge campaign here and this will be a night full of some disappointments but mainly really, really good news.

"It looks like we're going to retain government, which is absolutely fabulous news for the country and for South Australia."

Ms Downer said though she had not been targeted by GetUp and "left-wing activists" like she was at the by-election, police had charged a Centre Alliance supporter with stalking her.

"I'd ask any candidate or member of parliament to just ensure that we run on policies and not on personalities," she said.

She would not say whether she planned to run for a third time at the next election.
