The Cronulla Sharks are in damage control with chairman Damian Keogh standing down over drug allegations.

Keogh, 55, handed in his resignation on Saturday after he was allegedly found at an inner Sydney venue the previous night with a small resealable bag containing what's thought to be cocaine.

Sharks chief executive Lyall Gorman was forced to deny the club has a drug problem.

"If those things are endemic you just don't achieve what our club has achieved over the last two-and-a-half years on or off the field," he said.

It was more bad news for the NRL after three players were also allegedly caught with cocaine on Friday.

Sydney Roosters star Shaun Kenny-Dowall was charged with drug possession after allegedly found with just under half a gram of the cocaine at a Sydney nightclub.

And Kiwis captain Jesse Bromwich and teammate Kevin Proctor are also embroiled in a drugs scandal after accusations related to an early morning incident in the ACT after Friday night's Anzac Test.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg defended the code, saying steps had been taken to highlight the risk of drugs and that "ultimately individuals are accountable for their own choices".

Keogh is due to face Downing Centre Local Court on June 30 on a charge of drug possession.
