Shattered Perry brushes off WBBL plaudits

Sydney Sixers allrounder Ellyse Perry says her WBBL player of the award means little after their loss in the final to the Brisbane Heat.

Sydney Sixers superstar Ellyse Perry's achievements during WBBL04 are unlikely to be replicated anytime soon.

But in defeat she says they count for little.

The competition's glamour franchise fell agonisingly short of a third straight title after being upstaged by the Brisbane Heat in Saturday's final.

The Australian allrounder finished with 777 runs - with an average of 86.33 and two centuries - to be named the player of the tournament.

However she was more concerned by her statistics during the final - 33 runs off 37 balls.

Despite scoring at a strike rate of 121.21 throughout the season, she failed to fire at Drummoyne Oval, hitting one boundary.

"I don't want to be rude but it doesn't mean a lot," she said of her player of the tournament trophy

"It's nice to have the acknowledgement but at the end of the day I'd much prefer to have one of those champion hats and a trophy again this year.

"It's such a collective effort. I feel a deep sense of connection to everyone in our group and our support staff - we built this from the ground up four years ago.

"We've got used to winning so it sucks when you don't."

The Sixers will in some circles be accused of being too reliant on Perry.

However that ignores the contribution of Alyssa Healy (445 runs) Ash Gardner (337 runs) and Marizanne Kapp (20 wickets at an average of 17.50).

Perry said she felt responsible for the loss and was proud of her side's efforts to fight back late in the run chase.

"You're always in it in the final," Perry said.

"Beth (Mooney) probably took it away from us. Her innings is a blueprint of what we needed in ours, strike at around 120 and be in for a long period of time.

"When we got her out I thought we could definitely give ourselves a chance.

"But by that point I thought maybe we were a little bit too far gone."
