Firefighters on Tasmania's east coast will work through the night to try and contain an out-of-control blaze that has damaged two sheds, a caravan and machinery.

The fire at Dolphin Sands remains a threat to homes despite being downgraded to a watch-and-act alert on Wednesday.

"We're slowly gaining the upper hand. Crews are putting containment lines in place," Tasmania Fire Service public information officer Peter Middleton said.

The bushfire was the result of an escaped hazard reduction burn of less than one cubic metre on a property.

More than 120 hectares have since been burned.

"Anyone burning on private property needs to be adequately prepared for the risk of the burn escaping," TFS Regional Fire Investigator Adam Doran said, adding fire permits are required state-wide.

"Even though the temperatures are cooler, this is not the only factor to consider when planning to burn.

"Vegetation remains extremely dry in some areas, and there is a real risk of burns escaping and threatening properties."

Dolphin Sands Road has been re-opened to residents, who are being warned embers pose a threat to homes and the area is still at high risk.

More than 30 crews were deployed to the fire, plus water bombing aircraft.

A firefighter received minor injuries but was given the all-clear to return to duties.
