Canberra recruit David Shillington says he hopes to lead by example as the Gold Coast Titans rebuild after a horror 2015 NRL season.
Judging by his actions this year, that shouldn't be a problem.
Former Queensland Origin forward Shillington attended his first Titans session on Monday when the Gold Coast returned from their off-season break.
Shillington, 32, was mindful of the example he had to set at the Titans after their tumultuous year on and off the field.
Drug charges against ex-Gold Coast Titan Beau Falloon and former teammates, including Greg Bird, were dismissed in October.
Three others, including ex-State of Origin player Dave Taylor, have been ordered to stand trial on the Gold Coast.
A spate of injuries further hampered a Titans outfit that finished third last.
"The Titans have had some off-field distractions and high injury rate," Shillington said.
"Hopefully they are over that and everyone will be re-energised.
"My intention is to lead from the front, by example."
Just like he did at Canberra.
Former Test forward Shillington started the season in NSW Cup and appeared to hit rock bottom when he broke his thumb in the second tier competition.
However, countless hours spent mostly by himself in the University of Canberra's altitude chamber fast tracked his recovery, and stunning comeback.
Shillington finished the season as one of the Raiders' form forwards in a fitting farewell to his six year Raiders stint.
"I think changing clubs is a good thing later in your career," he said of his two year Titans deal.
"I am more nervous than I thought I would be but changing clubs...is never comfortable.
"But I want to try and impress these guys.
"I would love to be part of the rebuilding phase and setting new standards around here.
"Hopefully my actions prove that."
