Eleven people have been killed in northern Mexico in two shootouts between soldiers and suspected drug gang members.
The violence in Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Texas, prompted the temporary closure of the national highway that connects Tamaulipas state to central Mexico.
The state government said in a statement that the armed confrontations began early on Saturday.
In the first, troops killed eight suspected criminals on the highway, which handles nearly half of the export-import cargo between Mexico and the United States.
An hour later another shootout broke out nearby. Authorities say two suspects were killed, as was a woman who was travelling in her car on the highway.
