Rookies Matt Short and Seb Gotch have guided Victoria to a six-wicket Sheffield Shield win over Tasmania late on the final day of play.

Chasing 276, Victoria reached the target in the final hour before stumps on Tuesday as rain threatened.

Gotch (66 not out) and Short (64 not out) showed composure beyond their years in an unbeaten 131-run stand.

The 23-year-old Short inked Victoria's third Shield win from four matches this season with a six off Jackson Bird (2-65).

"For those two to stand up really shows their character," Victoria skipper Peter Handscomb said.

"To do so under pressure in a tough chase with a bit of rain about, and a good bowling attack - they can take a lot of confidence moving forward."

The pair came together at 4-145 after Victoria lost in-form opener Marcus Harris (67) and Cameron White (41) in consecutive overs.

Gotch hit 11 fours in his highest first-class score this season as Victoria finished at 4-276.

Matthew Wade pushed his Test claims in a losing side with a brilliant 137 that helped drag Tasmania back into the match.

The Tigers were skittled for 81 in their first innings, but recovered with 476 in the second.

Opener Alex Doolan started the fightback with 90 and now sits atop the Shield run scoring tally with 444.

"Proud of the way we fought back (but) we just haven't nailed a full game of cricket yet this season," Tigers captain George Bailey said of his side that sits fourth with one win.

Another looking to push his Test claims, Handscomb had a disappointing match for Victoria, scoring just four and 23.

Chris Tremain was the chief destroyer in Tasmania's first innings with 5-13.

Victoria are topping the Shield table, more than 10 points ahead of next-best Western Australia.
