Shorten braves animals, kids on campaign

Labor leader Bill Shorten defied the rule to not work with both animals and children on the third week of the campaign trail, with a fat cat teasing his future.

They say to never work with animals and children, but Labor leader Bill Shorten ticked both off this week on the campaign trail.

With childcare announcements come childcare centre visits, leaving Australian homes filled with footage of Mr Shorten reading books to youngsters.

It's like a mini press conference where the tables are turned, the man who wants to be prime minister asking children questions before the media pack grills him.

"Who likes strawberries?" he asked a room of toddlers in Melbourne while reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

"Me!" came the excited replies.

The mood is worlds apart from the line of questioning Mr Shorten faces over his policies.

But reading books to children in childcare centres is a sure fire way to prevent any run-ins with fed up voters, like the one in Tasmania who called Mr Shorten a "prick" before realising he wasn't Scott Morrison.

Mr Shorten is having the most public of job interviews in the hope of being prime minister.

He braved facing punters at a walk through Agfest outside of Launceston, feeding a bull and even meeting a 10.5kg feline being pushed in a pram.

"He's a decent sized cat," Mr Shorten said before learning its weight.

There'll be plenty more fat cats in his future if he wins the May 18 election.
