Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has urged Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to show more love to South Australia.

Mr Shorten came to Adelaide on Wednesday to announce Labor support for an irrigation project in the city's north.

He says Mr Turnbull should follow Labor's lead and back the project and should also back other initiatives in SA, including the electrification of an Adelaide train line.

"It seems every time there is news out of SA, Mr Turnbull takes the opposition view," Mr Shorten told reporters.

"People are sick of the tit for tat politics.

"Mr Turnbull needs to stand beside South Australians because for many years they have paid their taxes to Canberra.

"Now it is time for the SA economy to get a bit of backup from Mr Turnbull."

Mr Shorten said a Labor federal government would provide $45.6 million to fund the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme which would deliver water to 300 hectares of agricultural land and create 3700 jobs.

He said the coalition should also back the project immediately along with funding for the $76 million electrification of the Gawler train line.

The commonwealth should also provide more money to help Adelaide cope with the upcoming closure of the Holden car plant at Elizabeth, the opposition leader said.

"The effect of the closure of this car plant on small business and jobs is going to have ripples which will go far beyond the plant," he said.
