Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has demanded the prime minister end uncertainty over his controversial superannuation changes, calling for an independent review.

Mr Shorten insists Malcolm Turnbull needs to restore confidence in the sector, with backbenchers openly criticising the changes despite the prime minister maintaining "iron clad" support for them throughout the election campaign.

Mr Shorten wants an independent review, reporting to parliament, into whether the changes are retrospective.
