Bill Shorten watched record-breaking mare Winx storm home to win her 33rd race and took some inspiration from her victory.
"I love watching a favourite win," he said as he watched the race on a phone on the Labor media bus on Saturday.
The opposition leader is favoured to win the May 18 federal election, with Labor leading in all major polls.
But while Prime Minister Scott Morrison was at Randwick to watch Winx in person, Mr Shorten was in Gosford and Woy Woy talking about his plan to make cancer treatment cheaper.
The Labor leader announced $8.6 million to revamp the "slip, slop, slap" anti-skin cancer campaign with the Cancer Council.
"Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world. Over 2000 Australians will die this year because of skin cancer related illnesses," Mr Shorten told reporters in Gosford.
"It's now time after a decade of not taking action to have a national 'slip, slop, slap campaign 2.0'."
The campaign urges kids to slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat.
Mr Shorten has targeted Liberal seats in his first three days of the campaign, visiting Deakin in Victoria, and Bennelong, Reid and Robertson in NSW.
He has been campaigning strongly on cutting out-of-pocket costs for cancer patients, in a bid to outflank the coalition on healthcare.
After visiting the netball, Mr Shorten headed to a town hall meeting in Woy Woy, where he heard from voters.
The Labor leader has now held more than 80 town hall meetings around Australia in a bid to make sure he has heard from voters and battle-tested Labor's policies.
His wife Chloe and two of their children joined Mr Shorten at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney, where they went through a petting zoo and looked at some cows.
Earlier in the day Mr Shorten ran the Mt Penang park run, doing the five kilometres in just over 25 minutes.
