Former prime minister Tony Abbott says Labor leader Bill Shorten has had an "energetic" election campaign.

After eight weeks on the road, Mr Abbott said his successor Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mr Shorten would be feeling "a little apprehensive because obviously this is make-or-break time for both of them" as the July 2 polling day looms.

"The opposition leader, to his credit, has been energetic. His policies are absolute rubbish, but certainly it has been an energetic campaign," Mr Abbott told Sydney's 2GB Radio on Tuesday.
