Shorten mobbed in western Sydney

Bill Shorten has been mobbed by voters in western Sydney as they cheered and clapped for the Labor leader and his team in Lindsay.

Bill Shorten has been mobbed by supporters during a victory lap in the western Sydney seat of Lindsay, which has been snatched from the Liberals in a 4.6 per cent swing towards Labor.

A rock-star reception of cheers and claps from the public greeted the Labor leader and deputy Tanya Plibersek, who thanked voters in Penrith alongside Lindsay's Emma Husar and Macquarie's Susan Templeman.

Young and old lined up to meet the Labor cohort including familiar face Shane Mundt, without his famous rat 'Splinter', who was photographed with Malcolm Turnbull during the election campaign.

Mr Mundt assured the Labor politicians his vote had been cast for them otherwise his mother would "belt" him.

"I'm hoping that Shorten wins. I'm glad it's a lot closer than expected," he told Ms Plibersek on Monday afternoon.

In scenes reminiscent of the election campaign, a media pack jostled around Mr Shorten as he took photos with mums, babies, teens and and other locals at Penrith Westfield.

First time voter, Lachlan Matthews, 18, told Mr Shorten "I knew you had it right" while gathering his friends for a photo with the leader.

"They were the right choice for my future," he told AAP on his decision to choose Labor.

But not everyone was impressed by Labor's local win - one man yelled out "you're a corrupt sell out Bill Shorten ... going to hell".
